Pope Kyrillos VI laid the foundation stone of the Monastery of Saint Mina at Mariout on 27 November 1959, according to Al-Dostor (2018). It stands beside the ancient site of Abu Mena; Youm7 (2024) calls it the new Monastery of Saint Mina at King Mariout.

UNESCO notes that the neighbouring monastery is consulted informally on the management of the archaeological site. It is a working house of worship with its monks, so respect its prayers and its rules for visitors.
